Constitution Says Erring Judges Must Be Investigated By NJC Only — Afe Babalola

Abiodun Nejo, Ado Ekiti Legal luminary, Chief Afe Babalola (SAN), has described the proposed trial on Monday of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, at the Code of Conduct Tribunal over alleged failure to fully declare his assets as “denigration of the country’s Judiciary and Constitution.” He also noted the constitutional provision which stipulates that any infraction by judges must first be investigated and then resolved by the National Judicial Council, “to the exclusion of any other body or authority.” Babalola, in a statement on Sunday entitled, Proposed arraignment of the Hon Justice Walter Onnoghen: Again, I say two wrongs do not make a right, said the law had made clear the processes for the trial of judicial officers and as well their removal, hence the need to desist from “contempt and denigration of the judiciary.” He said: “I am of the view that the Constitution requires that any infraction by the said judges be firstly investigated and resolved by th

Stop Hate Buhari Campaign, Pay Your Staff, Presidency Warns Ortom

The presidency has called on Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State to desist from basing his campaign for re-election on falsehoods concerning President Muhammadu Buhari. According to a statement by Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President, Governor Ortom’s campaign is designed to drive attention from pertinent issues in Benue state. “Governor Ortom’s campaign is clearly one designed to stir division and hatred, and to divert the people’s attention from his inability to pay staff salaries and pensions for several months. Below is the full statement by the presidency. “It has been noted that the governor has been visiting churches in the state where he falsely tells congregations about President Buhari’s so-called plans to Islamise Benue State. This nonsense has formed the basis of his campaign, because he has nothing to offer Benue people. The allegations coming from Ortom were particularly unfair, when one considers how much support the governor received from the Fe

Onnoghen: PDP Is Sympathetic To Corruption, Says APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) says the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is sympathetic to corruption. The ruling party said this in reaction to a statement credited to the PDP. The opposition party had said that the allegations against Walter Onnoghen, chief justice of Nigeria (CJN), is a move by the APC government to constitute “a constitutional crisis” and “instill fear in judicial officers” to do its bidding. TheCable had earlier reported that there were moves to remove Onnoghen before the elections. The CJN has been accused of false assets declaration. But in a statement on Sunday, Lanre Issa-Onilu, APC spokesman, said the fight against corruption remains a cardinal promise made by his party to the electorate. “Following reports of the move to prosecute Justice Walter Onnoghen, chief justice of the federation, over an alleged infraction on the Code of Conduct laws, the swift statement by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) condemning the purported move has again exposed th

CJN Onnoghen’s Prosecution Shows No One Is Above The Law –sagay

The Chairman, Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN), says the prosecution of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, shows that no one is above the law. Sagay told our correspondent during an interview that although the prosecution of the CJN was saddening, it showed that Nigeria was slowly becoming a nation of laws. The Senior Advocate also referred to the arraignment of the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. Paul Usoro (SAN), which took place last year. The PACAC chairman said, “It shows that in Nigeria, nobody is above the law. “I do not rejoice, neither am I pleased that such high officials are being probed or investigated; but it shows that in Nigeria, the law is working and that the rule of law operates and that no one is higher than the law. “That is the good aspect of it. Otherwise, I am not happy about it. “But if the reason arises why they should be investigated or invited and they are invited, it shows t

Ahead of this year’s general elections, Dr. Harry Oranezi, Director-General of Atiku-Obi Campaign Organization, has warned the Anambra governor Willie Obiano to stop campaigning for President Muhammadu Buhari. Igbere TV reports that Oranezi’s warning came following recent comments credited to Obiano wherein he stated that Buhari had done well for the South-East and South-South geopolitical zones for commencing work on the second Niger Bridge. The governor also reportedly hailed Buhari for completing the Zik mausoleum in Onitsha, otherwise known as Zik Place, awarded 22 years ago, but abandoned by successive administrations. He said Obiano’s support for Buhari ran “counter to the collective and corporate interests of the Igbo.” Oranezi said: “Obiano support for Buhari is in utter disregard to his (Buhari’s) penchant to marginalise and discriminate against the people of the South-East and Anambra State in particular. “Buhari has continued to maintain studied silence over the massacre

Yoruba should vote Buhari to honour my father – Abiola’s son

Son of the winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief Moshood Abiola, Jamiu on Saturday urged the Yoruba to vote massively for President Muhammadu Buhari for honouring his father. Jamiu, who is a member of the Directorate of Contact and Mobilisation of the Women and Youth Presidential Campaign Team, described Buhari as a detribalised leader. Speaking with journalists in Lagos, Jamiu said Buhari should not be described anywhere as tribalistic, adding that if he was, he would not have honoured his father 25 years after the annulment of the election. He urged the Yoruba to reelect Buhari on February 16 so as not to betray Abiola and his slain wife, Kudirat, in their graves. He said, “People have to understand that any man that can honour a victory won by another man from another tribe is not a tribalist. If he was tribalistic, he would not have done what he did to M.K.O Abiola. “Buhari had even said in the letter of honour that June 12 is more important
