In-Anagbado's Mmuo outing, values, lifestyle are questioned

By Chimezie Nebolisa It is an open secret that our society is bedeviled in identity crisis. In our pursuit of a better life, we are losing the very core of our existence. This very core of our existence is in shambles as such every aspect of our lives are imploding. We as a people have alienated from the values and identity that sum us as Igbo. Human relations have gone sour and unimaginable as we struggle to outclass one another fiercely even if it takes its toll on our lives. In this season of grave moral decadence, brutish lifestyles and erosion of goodwill, truly, elders are home as the goat birthed in the tether. These societal flaws wont have found their way into our daily activities had we maintained and preserved our local values in our quest for foreign lifestyles acclimatisation. In the process of these newfound lifestyles, we lost ideas, cultures and teachings handed down to us by our forebears. Today, couple rarely drink the palm wine offered during marriage rites, many don

Centre for Memories: Leveraging on lessons from past to build future

By Chimezie Nebolisa In recent times, it is has become evident that societies transcend to higher level of development through historical trajectories. The developed world continues to achieve enormous societal progress because they have harnessed a common ground where historical events, values and artifacts serve as tools for development.  Unlike the developed world, African societies have failed to take a cue from their western counterparts to explore their histories and export them to outside world. At times, not just do the people fail to identify with their history, values and cultures, most are oblivious of such events.  History as a subject has been relegated to the background in Nigerias secondary school curriculum for over a decade now. A society that wishes to achieve nation-building cannot not attain her predilections if it continues to deny her past and not reconciling it with her present conditions/events. Knowledge of our history will not only help to influence our under

Dire Global Implications of Bill, Melinda Gates Separation

By Chimezie Nebolisa After twenty-seven (27) years of blissful marriage, Bill and Melinda Gates have decided to call it quit of their union. In a joint tweet, the power couple tweeted, "we no longer believe we can grow together as a couple". After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage". The couple first met in 1987, when Melinda joined Bills Microsoft as a product manager. The pair would later tie the knot in the year 1994 on the Hawaiian island of Lanai and together they have three children, who are between the ages of 18-25. Bill Gates, according to Forbes, is the fourth wealthiest man on the planet, with a net worth of about $124 billion (£89bn). Vast majority of his wealth comes from his 1.3% shares he owns in Microsoft, a technological firm which he co-founded. Melinda on the other hand, owns Pivotal Ventures, an investment company with focus on women and families founded in 2015. Reacting to th

Abba Kyari: When Super Cop falls

By Chimezie Nebolisa DCP Abba Kyari Until last week, Abba Kyari, a Deputy Commissioner in the Nigeria Police Force was seen as the best prize asset of the force (at least from governments viewpoint). Kyari and his former team of the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) were the men to send' when tough security/crime challenges spring up in any part of the country. Mr. Kyari as the leader of his team have been celebrated for smoking out and eventually capturing the notorious high-profile kidnapper – Evans, the recent clamped down of Unknown Gunmen (UGM) and their activities in Imo State. Kyaris status as a Super Cop was further cemented when he was recognised for his unrivalled performances by the Nigerian House of Representatives in June 2020. Despite his rising profile as a celebrity Cop for his smartness and dexterity in the delivery of his job, public opinion had questioned his modus operandi. He had been time past accused severally of playing dirt and

Japa: A system failure implications on socio-cultural development

By Chimezie Nebolisa Japa: A system failure implications on socio-cultural development Overtime, Japa a Yoruba street parlance which means to get out or escape has permeated Nigerias social media space especially Twitter as a favourite word amongst its users. The word connotes the need and desire to emigrate to other countries. People who have successfully emigrated usually post pictures of themselves in their new location and a scene from Kemi Adetibas movie, King of Boys 2 where the lead actress, Sola Sobowale raised a glass of wine to a toast with the cabals saying, Welcome to a new dispensation which depicts her regaining her crown. This social phenomenon of movement is at its peak in the months of April, May, August, September and October when new academic sessions set in, in Europe and the United States. In relation, many who have emigrated to the northern divide of the world from Nigeria see it as a triumph of light over darkness, with the belief and knowledge that their new ab

On a horse ride to Malivore

By Chimezie Nebolisa On May 30th, 2021, in the mood of the Biafran Memorial Day Celebration, I wrote an eulogy for many, over three millions who lost their lives during the war. I equally prayed that we attain the struggle which they died for  equity, justice, fairness and good governance. Of the many engagements I got on my social media handles, one by a brother piqued my interest. He commented - Story'.  When l saw his comment, I felt a sharp pain and anger within, that he doesnt believe that the Nigerian dream is achievable  where Equity, Justice, Fairness and Coherence will reign. I wanted to lecture him, to bequeath him the message of hope, that with conscious efforts of all, our dear nation can be redeemed. But I couldnt do that, for I lost courage to go down that lane. Reason? I saw no lie in his thought and word.  Data released by Statisense in 2021 show that 78.5% of Nigerians are under 40 while over 53% of Nigerias population were not born as of 1999. This means from all

As Okonjo-Iwealas battle for the soul of WTO Continues

By Chimezie Nebolisa Last week the United States blocked the appointment of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, a former finance minister of Nigeria and ex-managing director at the World bank as the next Director-General, World Trade Organisation(W.T.O), the international organisation responsible for setting and to uphold the terms, conditions and legalities on which trade is to be carried out by her member nations in the international market and economy, despite winning the overwhelming support of the organisation's 164 members.  Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala With no consensus reached, Okonjo-Iweala is a just a step away from becoming the first woman and the first African to head the international trade watchdog after securing the support of key group of trade ambassadors in Geneva as against her rival, Yoo Myung-hee, the South Korean Trade minister. According to sources, she is backed by countries in the Caribbean, Africa, the European Union, China, Japan and Australia.  Having failed to gain the support

COVID-19: Adaptation as a necessary skill to man's survival

By Chimezie Nebolisa In today's world economy, the havoc being wrecked by the emergence of the Coronavirus pandemic is no longer news. Apart from what now seems to be an orthodox discourse on the health implications of the virus, the economic mayhem associated with pandemic has garnered more public opinion. Over the past few months since the Coronavirus pandemic emergence, the global oil value and price tend to fluctuate, stocks have devalued and various businesses struggle to stay afloat. Just last week, the management of one of the top players of the Nigerian banking sector, Access bank, through her MD/CEO, Herbert Wigwe, noted that about seventy-five percent of her workforce would be retrenched and laid off, while over three hundred of her branches would be shut down till further notice, this notwithstanding after the banking firm had declared earlier that her staff would take pay cuts in their salaries and wages. He also stated that those to be affected by this essential down-c
