A BLOW BACK: WHY YORUBA SHOULD FEAR THE RESURGENCE OF JUNE 12 1993 ELECTION IN 2023

On Muslim-Muslim ticket.

Tinubu and Shettima

Since today is july 12th, i will say a little on june 12th

The only person who won a presidential election on a Muslim-Muslim ticket in the history of Nigeria was Moshood Abiola. June 12 1993 election was later annulled by Ibrahim Babangida. Abiola was later jailed for announcing himself as the president of Nigeria by those who promised a smooth transition to third republic after the 1989 Republican constitution was written.

Moshood Abiola

Instead, Ibrahim Babangida created an Interim Government headed by Tunde Idiagbon that was overran by Abacha roughly two months later. The grand plan was to keep power in the North. The only reason Babangida left power was because of the unending protest against his almost unending rulership. In fact, the history of military rule in Nigeria is the history of Norther affairs in Nigeria.

Theme: Abiola chose North but North killed him.

Kashim Shettima

The last thing I will be forced to believe is the absolute, unquestionable decency, and innocence of a Governor under whose watch Boko-Haram ravaged Borno state. On a personal ground, I cannot believe he can be innocent. God forbid I believe such.

My focus now is the moral justification for having a Muslim-Muslim ticket on a presidential ballot.

First, there's no official account of the most populous religion in Nigeria, however muslims appear  to have dominated the political scene and obviously more popular in both our past and recent history. I once read a wikipedia thread which says Muslims in Nigeria account for 51 percent-while Christians make up 49 percent. Although there was no mention of other third religion.

In Lebanon, Christians are roughly 32 percent. Whenever the prime minister is the Muslim, a Christian becomes the president. It's a traditional practice in that country today. Even though there has been economic downturn in Lebanon for like a decade now, we do not hear such thing as marginalization. If a group that's 32 percent in Lebanon is constantly in government, there can be no way you will deny a population of about 49 percent populous the right to be part of the executive president for eight long years.

Nigeria is multilingual and multi religious. Our politics must reflect this diversity. Appointments must reflect this diversity. And because power is centered in this country, development must also deflect this diversity. You can't build rail lines with oil money gotten from the South South SS while neglecting SS. I just cannot wrap this around my head. It shouldn't he happening at all. Over 80 percent of our FX comes from crude oil.

If i say for the sake of equity presidential ticket should reflect this religious difference it will sound as if i am seeking favour. No it is not a favour, It must reflect.

It is not called representative democracy only because it is indirect democracy. It is also called representative democracy because it is someone that looks like you, thinks like you-someone that you share the same faith with that represents you. In other words, an alien cant represent you. Otherwise it will be tagged colonialism by country men. Believe it or not, there are a lot of Yoruna who see Igbo as alien and vice versa. Same is application to other tribes.

Igbo grievances

Just few months back, Igbo commemorated the departed souls of people they see as martyrs. Truth was, no other tribe sympathized with them. How is it possible that people who do not share in their pains feel obliged to represent them in government in their absence?

The grievance was in commemoration or remembrance of the departed souls lost in the Nigerian-Biafran War or Nigerian Civil war. Whether it was a pogrom or genocide, ethnic cleaning-till date the intention or what was the aim for such aggression has not been disclosed. It was definitely not a war of equals.

Was it a genocide?

When the USA suspected the actions of the Nigerian government to be tantamount to genocide, the British government told their American counterpart that we had nothing more than a thousand Hausa-Fulani muslims in the Nigerian Army by then. In the mind of the Brits, a thousand military men cannot independently or strategically execute this heinous crime. In fact, during this war, those from the north-central helped prosecute this almost unending voyage of aggression. The Nigerian state denied it was a genocide. As the English Dictionary would say 'A GENOCIDE Will ALWAYS BE FOLLOWED BY THE DENIAL THAT IT EVER HAPPENED'

This said pogrom started from the South West-Lagos precisely so you cannot be surprise why an igbo share common resentment for the Yoruba. But was such clampdown before and  after Yakubu gowon took over power a Yoruba monitored violence? Or was it simply because Lagos was the capital of Nigeria? As the capital, government propaganda machines are here and there, Security men, media and even the presidential villa.

Obafemi Awolowo

If we are going to absolve the Yoruba of any wrongdoing, what about the role played by Obafemi Awolowo? Is it forgivable? No it is not. It is not forgivable. But then i understand the circumstances surrounding his release from jail and his subsequent appointments to oversee the economy of this nation.

Obafemi was a slave to the system. When he gained freedom, instead of fighting against such continuous slavery he decided to help propagate more slavery.
What about the arguement that Igbo paid the price The Democrats paid for trying to alter the American confederacy? I think this argument is for mad people.

I have said this before, what the people said yesterday is what is in the constitution and what the people will say today is what the constitution should become.

The Nation is not a physical body that you see, a family that you have, nor a beautiful lady that you could love. It is the conglomeration of lands (territory), people (population), power (government), legal positivism (Law) and (sovereignty). Infact, it is a well crafted domain that a group of homogeneous people, who share similar ancestral coloration claim to have power over. No man or woman on earth mystically love his or her Nation. The love people have for their darling Nation, some would say, are mere responses to the love the Nation in question has shown to its people.
It is Quid pro quo in its basic. Advanced form of barter. It's a give and take world. This is patriotism guided by rationality going by the judgement of historical materialism. Love for Nation shouldn't be wrapped in emotions. Finally and most importantly, no being should be coerced into loving or settling for a Nation State.

On Kwankwaso/Obi ticket

Since their personal interests and idiosyncrasy wouldn't permit compromise on their path then i think it's a lose-lose for both of them, (presently). Things may still change.

On Kwankwaso:

Kwankwaso

Yes I have friends who had their questionable reservations for Kwankwaso. Yes i was one of those who keenly and affectionately monitored Kwankwaso while he was the governor of Kano state. Kwankwaso doesn't appear humble or diligent but gets things donem

Kwankwaso was a man who loved his people (Kano state indigenes). He sent tons of kano indigenes on scholarship, built the longest flyover bridge in Nigeria, built  schools in the whole 44 local governments areas that are in kano state.
I like him because I once listened to him say-Kano state would soon overgrow Lagos state infrastructurally.  This is the kind of person I want to see lead Nigeria. A man who is jealous of someone else development. A man who is not comfortable with the status quo. A man who give scholarship to his people. A man who has a competitive mindset.

Kwankwaso reminds me of first generation leadership qualities in Nigeria. Leaders such as Obafemi Awolowo who cherish the people of South West. Sardauna who loved the people of the North and Michael Okpara a socialist who believed in the growth of all. Development in the first republic was driven from the grassroots and not from the capital.

On Obi

Obi
Obi is a prudent liberal capitalist and economist. The former governor of Anambra state. Known for projects on human capital development. A staunch reformist. A non conformist. No matter the adjectives i adopt, Obi like other people has his ideas that might not augur well or resonate well with you. No one is perfect so is Obi. He is a specialist, strategist and a thinker. He is also a father.

The ideas and solutions Obi brings to the table are 21st century ideas. Areas Obi has pitched his tent on are:
1. Education
2. Clean water
3. Reduction of maternal mortality
4. Emphasis on inequality
5. Creation of jobs
6. Women empowerment
7. Green Energy
8. Protection of Human Rights
9. Protection of the media

Some of these are not what we see with our eyes. However, when proper provisions are made to cover these essential areas of man's life, it triggers overall development. These are areas that any serious society cannot neglect.
Because Obi's quest for development hovers around human development- undoubted casts him as the best candidate.

What I think Obi needs right now

Create alliances. Do not alienate or isolate yourself. For years, Buhari isolated himself and lost all elections until he built a cancerous bridge that has almost devoured this country. Against all odds, he won an election in 2015. Build bridges with politicians Peter Obi. In politics, no time is too much and non is too short. Start traveling now. Not every politician will accept you even if it is done in good faith. But then the people can see. They have eyes, ears, brain which give them the insight and foresight.
The means does not always justify the ends, but then, Of what essence is the means if it cannot justify the ends?

My fear

My fear is actually shaped and extrapolated from recent historical antecedents in Nigeria. It is propelled by the fact that we rallied around Buhari in 2015 just like Millions of Nigerians are currently doing for Obi but the old man failed not only the ordinary man on the street but also his kingsmen in Abuja, Katsina and Lagos.
As I grow, i am also bordered by the outcomes and consequences of my actions too. As history has also thought me the evil sides of populist.

I was on radio weeks ago, and the Emir of Katsina, Dr. Abdulmumini Kabir Usman was bitterly lamenting the worsening security atmosphere in Katsina state...the state of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

On Tinubu/APC/Supporter

We cannot graduate from Sai Baba sai Baba to Sai kaka, sai Kaka, Dino Melaye, (2022).

Kaka means grand father in Hausa

Since life is not promised, if anything happens to Tinubu, power heads back to the North as it did in 1993.

The same members of the APC who called Jonathan, Stella Odua and Atiku corrupt without jurisprudence from a competent Court of Law, are asking me to prove that Tinubu is corrupt. These people are joke to themselves.
Again, we have the court of law and we also have court of public opinion.
If the court of public opinion says you are corrupt, you have to prove to the public that you are not corrupt because you can do absolutely nothing to them. The president of Sri Lanka resigned because of his place was invaded. It was an uprising to drive home their grievances. The public court is always right.

Most, if not all of the people on Pandora paper are not corrupt going by your flawed logic. These guys are not convicted by the court...therefore no penny is stolen from Africa and taken to Europe. Doesn't this sound stupid?

I dont think the judicial arm can function properly when we have a disfunctional executive. The principles of separation of power and checks and balance are made truism when each arm realizes its independence reflect the true independence of the Nation.

APC supporters are of four categories

1. This set of people joined to exploit the economy in the past seven years.
2. The rural electorates who dwell in the villages. They dont expected anything from those they elected.
3. Those who think this is our turn to rule.
4. The last category are those who have either benefited directed or that will benefit if Tinibu becomes president.
Do you know what all of them have in common? They dont care about Nigeria being labelled the Poverty Capital of the World.

Universities have shut down. Poverty is on the spring. Inequality is on the rise. Security has been loosened
And someone with brain wants us to vote for APC and its enablers (Tinubu)? No wonder he was quiet during every attack in the South West. These people want to become president at every cost. Even at the cost of the lives of their own people.
Nigerians and Africans who are innovative remain in Europe and America, majority of those who can't complete run back to Africa to become politicians. In the era of independence we can say they were coming back to fight against colonialism...

God forbid the second coming of Buhari and his henchmen.

AGAIN
